New Scenic Café Celebrating 20 Years

New Scenic Café is celebrating its 20 year anniversary.  Over the years a lot has changed, but the menu, atmosphere, and staff keep people coming back.  

For owner Scott Graden, the idea to open a restaurant started long before the New Scenic Café came along.

"My Aunt Rita and I always shared a funky little dream and that was to have a restaurant on the North Shore," Graden said. 

When the cafe went up for sale 21 years ago, it was the perfect opportunity.

"That would have been June of '98 and by April 1 of 1999 we took ownership," Graden said.  

Now, exactly 20 years later they're enjoying all of the memories. 

"It's fast how that goes," Graden said.

They kicked off a month of celebrations on March 31 with a brunch for special guests.  Starting April 1, they have a special menu that will last all month.  The menu is full of their classics to celebrate the anniversary.  

"Our tuna tacos are kind of a flagship, we're gonna have ratatouille lasagna, we're gonna have pistachio crusted goat cheese," Graden said.  

Their menu this month will show off what they've worked hard to do from the very beginning.

"To take and put food that we thought was good and we valued on the table in front of people and much like art hoping that someone would enjoy," Graden said. 

They kept the menu interesting and that often meant doing something new.

"We brought spring greens into this area where kind of the classic iceberg salad was common," Graden said.  "We brought goat cheese to the table."

They didn't always get the reactions they wanted, but that hasn't mattered much over time.

"We've got 20 years behind us that says that we appeal to enough people and we're grateful for their support all these years," Graden said. 

From customers to staff, to renovations,  a lot has changed since they first opened.

"We put a garden in the beginning, we added a dining room, we put in a computer system so we didn't have handwritten tickets," Graden said.  

They continue to make adjustments with a new entryway.

"It was always tight, I guess is the right way to think about it and what we decided was to use this real estate to go towards the lake," Graden said.  "It really formalized it and it feels good it feels refreshing."  

Despite the changes, the goal to share amazing food along the shore remains the same.

"It feels good to have been viable for the past 20 years, but that doesn't mean we're done, there's just new and more to come," Graden said.
