The Cook County Sheriff's office says 75-year-old Niles Richard Schultz was on the lake paddling his canoe, when the party he was with heard a splash. The party saw Schultz standing up trying to right the tipped over canoe. Authorities say he then went under the water.

After others unsuccessfully attempted to locate him in the water, a member of the party called 911. Multiple agencies arrived at the Sawbill Lake Boat Landing to search. Schultz's body was recovered around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Officials say he was not wearing his life jacket. An autopsy will be completed to confirm the cause of his death.

The sheriff's office received assistance from Cook County Search & Rescue, a Minnesota Conservation Officer, 1854 Treaty Authority Law Enforcement, and a Cook County Emergency Chaplain.
