The school year is almost over and that means thousands of Northland kids will be free from homework and lessons for around three months. To celebrate, the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center is putting on a free skating event.

In addition to ice skating, there will be fun carnival games, a bouncy house, activities by the Lake Superior Zoo, Arts and Crafts and free smoothies from Whole Foods Co•op in Duluth. The event is organized by the heritage center and Duluth city officials.

"Typically, the city parks and rec provides volunteers and staff these events," Same Werle with the City of Duluth says. "We get to highlight all the great facilities and resources at the heritage center."

The "School's Out Skate" is Wednesday, May 29 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. All students are welcome.

If you can't make it next week, the center hosts free skating sessions every Wednesday. Also, the parks and recreation department has a new recreation initiative. They're aiming to put on similar events, that will get people out and about, throughout the summer.
