Firefighters with the Duluth Fire Department are once again hitting the streets for the cause of Muscular Dystrophy. Starting on Tuesday, folks might see a fireman with a boot in hand.

To preview the annual drive, Chris Orman and Spencer Gebhardt of the Duluth Fire Department sat down with us.

Orman explains that the fire department is just a "vehicle" for the money. The department acts as a collector, making it easier for the community to donate. Last year, the Duluth Fire Department collected $46,000 for MDA.

The community gives positive feedback to this event. Orman says that people want to give. He's had fellow firefighters tell him they're not excited at first, but once they get out on the streets, their tune changes.

"They have nothing but fun for the next three hours while people are giving them money," said Orman.

'Fill the Boot' has become a favorite fundraiser for good reason. All proceeds go toward research and services for the Minnesota Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

'Fill the Boot' runs Tuesday, August 8 through Thursday, August 10.

Duluth Firefighters will be at the following intersections from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.:

  • 40th Avenue West and Grand Avenue
  • Central Entrance and Arlington Avenue
  • Lake Avenue and Railroad Street
  • Woodland Avenue and Arrowhead Road

There will also be collection locations by the fire stations near Lakeside and Gary-New Duluth, as well. The firefighters collect spare change, cash, and they also accept checks as a form of donation - just make the check out to MDA. Orman says they have have received donations in the form of wedding rings as well, but they usually try to give those back.

The Superior Fire Department will also be taking part in the 'Fill the Boot' fundraiser August 8-10 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Firefighters will be taking donations at Wal-Mart and both Super One Foods locations in Superior.
