A barber in Victorian era England, wronged by an evil judge, is seeking revenge. This is the short synopsis of Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street, as told by local actor Paul Coate.
He's taking on the role of Benjamin Barker/Sweeney Todd in the Duluth Playhouse production of the dark comedy/musical.
"It really does focus on that revenge aspect," Coate says. "I think it's a really important cautionary tale. I enjoy delving into a character like that to figure out how he ticks."
Locally-known actress Jen Burleigh-Bentz plays Mrs. Lovett, a meat pie shop owner that's in love with Mr. Todd. She says her character's goal is to keep him in her life, while taking steps up to the next 'class.'
"Each scene that we have is the next step towards making their lives better," Burleigh Bentz says.
Elements of murder and conspiracy mix with aspects of humor and silliness throughout the show to create a dark comedy of sorts.
Shows run every Thursday through Sunday from March 28 to April 14 at Norshor Theatre. Click here to buy tickets.
