Market Day Duluth is one of the dozens of area businesses getting ready for Small Business Saturday. Owner Lanae Rhodes says there are many benefits to shopping small.

"You get to know the people who are making what you're buying," she says. "You actually get to support people in your community. You might run into them at the grocery store after you've purchased something they've made."

Rhodes says that businesses like hers can't always provide 'big deals.' Instead, a place might provide a fun activity or organize a gathering of local makers that people can meet.

"We make it more of an event than a sale," she explains.

It just so happens that Market Day Duluth is a group of local makers that collectively sell their goods in one spot. They offer classes for residents to make something of their own as well. Rhodes herself makes cosmetics and will be doing make-up demonstrations. A local farmer will also be in-store selling preserves, jams and jellies.

"Seeing people walk downtown" she says, "just enjoying and saying 'I didn't even know that existed!' It's just so fun to see that energy."
