The start of the school year is just around the corner and CHUM is once again distributing backpacks for Duluth school children grades K-12.

They're giving away the backpacks on August 22, so there's still time to donate.

Scott Van Daele, the CHUM Distributive Services Director, said the backpack project started a long time ago when CHUM saw a need in the community to help kids that were falling behind without supplies.

"It has sort of just grown and grown and grown throughout the years," Van Daele said.  "Last year we gave away about 1200-1300 backpacks and there was still a need, so we shot for 1400 backpacks."

Van Daele said they have met that goal, but they're going to continue to get as much as they can to see how many they can get to help kids start off on the right foot.

There are school supplies packed into each backpack and Van Daele said it takes an army of volunteers to get that done.

The distribution of backpacks is happening on August 22 from 12-4 p.m. at Portman Community Center, Morgan Park Community Center, and Central Hillside Community Center.  It is open to anyone in the Northland.

They're accepting monetary donations, backpacks, and school supplies until August 18.
