With the help of community support more than 60 Duluth area elementary students were able to participate in a flag football league this fall season.

D'Andre Sherill and Demetrice Whittaker were the masterminds behind the idea of providing a league to get kids active and teach them the game of football. The league included students from second to fifth graders from Stowe and Laura MacAurther Elementary schools. The second and third graders would play against each other in games, and the third and fourth graders would do the same.

Sherill and Whittaker were also the coaches of the teams. They say their background growing up playing football in Florida is a big part of why they wanted to provide an opportunity for kids to learn how to play the game.

"We want to show them the importance of hard work, dedication, and eventually how playing with girls can also improve your social skills," said Sherill.

Both coaches said the league would not have been possible without the help of the two schools' principals, Duluth Area Family YMCA, the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland, the Duluth Police Department, and the Valley Youth Center.

They hope to expand the flag football league next season as well as potentially add more youth sporting programs this winter.
