It's never too early to hone your bow hunting skills. Running until early September, area archery clubs have set up 3D archery shoots, which is a great way keep those hunting skills in tune during the off season.

Hidden among the green and brown branches near the Pine Valley Ski Area in Cloquet are deer, bear, dinosaurs and even alligators. They are all different targets set up by Chad Lane and his family, who inherited the duties just last year to help with the Cloquet Area Archery Club.

"We just want to get everybody out here that likes to shoot a bow," said Lane. "You know, kids, beginners, to come out and check it out because it's a blast. We shot it once before we took it over and we had fun."

Brandon Soderlund was one archer trying out these 3D targets for his first time.

"This is actually my brother's old bow and this is the first time I've shot it with 3D targets," said Soderlund.

He added he hit a lot of trees, like a few others out on the traIls, but learned that slow and steady earned the bullseye.

"You just have to take your time. If you go fast, you usually pull one way or the other," said Soderlund.

Near each target there are different markers staked out that provide a longer or shorter distance for archers to shoot from, as well as scoring rings to make things more competitive.

"You can keep score that way or if people just want to come out and shoot for fun, we're fine with that too. It's more or less we want to get as many people out as we can to enjoy the sports of archery, to enjoy it as exercise and have fun." said Lane.

The Cloquet Archery Club will hold their next 3D Archery Shoot on June 10th and 11th.
