Ashland, Wisc. - For the Northland College LumberJill Women's Lacrosse Team, it was only a matter of time for the first-year varsity program. The wait for their first victory in program history came to an end Sunday morning when the Jills knocked off Oakland University in Michigan in a wild 9-8 victory on the road.

A hot start to the game was the key as Northland would get out to a quick 5-0 lead before Oakland was able to get on the board. The quick lead was just as quickly dissipated as the Jills would head into halftime with a mere one goal lead at 6-5.

"The first eight minutes of the game was absolute perfection for us," said LumberJill Head Coach David Pomeroy in a press release. "It really showed what we are made of. We did not have a dropped pass during the whole eight minutes, we scored five unanswered goals and caused four turnovers during that time span. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together and the team is getting excited to enter the second half of the season on a winning streak."

After halftime, the Jills were able to muster an additional three goals and held off a late rally by Oakland to secure the 9-8 victory.

For the game, freshman Margaret Cusey would lead the way for the Jills, scoring 4 goals and adding 1 assist. Chloe Marshall chipped in 2 goals, while Emily Covert, Ashley Hammes and Harley Kinney would each add 1. Ariah Law would get the win in goal and Josephine McGregor would also have two saves while in net. The Jills managed to get off 23 shots and won 9 draws overall.

"I have been coaching lacrosse for ten years, and the feeling of winning on Sunday was one of the most amazing experiences," said Pomeroy. "This is my first win as a NCAA Head Coach and a first win for our inaugural program. This is a first that I am so happy to experience with this group of young women. We are from all lengths of the lacrosse world, but we are a family and we are LumberJill Lacrosse."

The LumberJills will return to action this Thursday when they head to Dubuque, Iowa for a match-up with Loras College. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
