Off to a 4-1 start is a complete transformation for the Esko football team that posted just a 2-8 record last season.
"We just hated losing. We hated losing and like to win," said Esko senior quarterback Brendan Durand. "If things aren't going right we find a way to win."
Plus with a year under his belt, Head Coach Scott Arntson says that there's no longer uncertainty of figuring out where his players fit best.
"I think we had probably more of a focus or a clear direction on both sides of the ball," Arntson said about this year. "This is who we are and it maybe took us a little while."
One thing coach notes is the improvement of his team's chemistry this season. That includes the dynamic duo of Brendan Durand and Brandon Matteen, at the quarterback and wide receiver position, which can get a a bit confusing both on and off the field at times.
"Our teachers get our names mixed up. They call us one and two," said Esko senior wide receiver Branden Matteen. "They still don't know our names really, but we're like the same person."
"Ever since I've been with him it's been one and two or we get called by our last names. We don't get called by our first names anymore," added Durand.
The two of them are three sports athletes that play football, hockey, and baseball. They credit their chemistry on the field to how much time they've spent together when it comes to sports. When it comes to football, the duo has played a large part in the Eskomo's progress this season and has connected for a touchdown in just about every game this season.
"We are together all the time and we've just built some chemistry throwing touchdowns," said Matteen.
Esko will hit the road this Friday for a game against Aitkin.
