Tina Smith, a Democrat, took the oath of office Wednesday, replacing Al Franken in the U.S. Senate. She will appear a public event hosted by Duluth Mayor Emily Larson on Friday.

The free "community meet-and-greet" will be held at Hoops Brewing in Canal Park. The gathering will begin at 5:30 p.m., with remarks from Smith and Larson at 6 o'clock.

Larson had already worked with Smith in her previous role as Lieutenant Governor and called her a longtime champion for Duluth.

"Minnesotans will be incredibly well served by her expanded leadership as our new senator. For Senator Smith to select Duluth as the location for her first public event speaks volumes about her commitment to Greater Minnesota and the important role of Duluth as a core part of Minnesota’s growing economy," Larson said in a news release.

Smith's office said Friday's event will include members of the area's business and labor communities, as well as local public officials.
