Thursday was a historic day in Superior. For the first time in the 133-year history of the city's police department, an African-American recruit has been hired on the force.

Ronald Robinson was unaware he had made history until Eyewitness News brought it to his attention.

"I was not aware of that actually, so that is awesome,” said Robinson.

Superior police chief Nick Alexander pinned Robinson’s badge to his chest at the ceremony. Chief Alexander says, like many of his peers, the young recruit has all the characteristics to be a good police officer.

"Ron possesses all of the same qualities that we wanted here. He's honest. He's respectful. He's calm. He's intelligent,” said Alexander.

Chief Alexander says expanding the diversity of the force has been a hot topic since he was named to the post. Alexander says an increased outreach to UWS and its black student union has increased candidates.

“Ultimately that leads us to today where we do welcome our first African-American officer on the police department,” said Alexander.

Robinson has a background in law enforcement as a member of the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth. So his fiance Ericka Holtz isn't too worried about Robinson patrolling the streets.

"I know it's a dangerous job. But I'm really excited for him, and he's wanted to do it for a long time, and he's worked really hard to get to this place. I'm really really happy for him," said Holtz.

With his family and peers supporting him, there's only one thing left for the recruit to worry about on his first day.

"Just got to focus and get the job done,” said Robinson.

Three other recruits were also sworn in at the ceremony. They are Charles Mahlen, Patrick Deighnan and Russ Milroy.

All four recruits still have some amount of training to do before they begin patrol, and that training begins next week.
