Ontario Provincial Police say the single engine Cessna 172 crashed late Wednesday night about 60 kilometers, or 37 miles, east of Marathon. The OPP was informed of the crash on Thursday, and the crash site was accessed by helicopter.

The OPP says the pilot of the aircraft was not located at the scene of the crash. The plane had been rented in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a missing person, according to the OPP.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the cause of the crash, but the OPP says its involvement in the investigation has concluded.

An earlier version of this story, based on initial information from the OPP, incorrectly stated the day of the week that the crash occurred.
