The collision happened just after 2 p.m. on County Road 501, also known as Clearline Road Northwest, in Lammers Township, about 12 miles west of Bemidji. Chief Deputy Ernie Beitel says a northbound 2014 Chevrolet Silverado entered the railroad crossing and was struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.

The driver, a 73-year-old woman from Chatfield, Minn., suffered injuries that are potentially life-threatening. She was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital for treatment.

A 74-year-old male passenger in the pickup, also from Chatfield, was taken by ambulance to a Bemidji hospital. No BNSF employees were injured.

Beitel says the crossing is controlled only by a stop sign for vehicular traffic.
