The Itasca County Sheriff's Office responded to the 1300 block of 4th Street Southeast in Grand Rapids at 3:47 p.m. Thursday. Authorities say they arrived within four minutes of the call.

The 29-year-old's mother allegedly made the call after she went to their house to check on them.

Authorities found the boy still breathing. He was airlifted to a Duluth hospital.

Grand Rapids Assistant Police Chief Steve Schaar says it's hard to believe something like this happened.

"Shootings like this don't happen that often in Greater Minnesota, and especially in Grand Rapids," Schaar said. "Our last shooting was several years ago. We had a double shooting, as well. When things like this happen -- shootings like this happen -- it's very sad. It hits close to home. We're a small community."

Schaar said there is no public danger.

Authorities are withholding the names of the father and the son until family is notified.

Grand Rapids Police, the Itasca County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating. Minnesota State Patrol troopers were also on scene.
