"We just love the breed," said President of AWPCA, Jim Boyd."I've probably been in the breed for approximately 20 years."

Boyd says he's happy to bring the national event to Solon Springs for the first time. More than 100 dogs are expected to compete in the show.

"It (the show) basically involves all aspects of the breed. It includes the confirmation, the show part -- that includes obedience," said Boyd. "There's three days of the show portion."

Preparations began bright and early Thursday for the competition, but before the big show participants took part in events like the fun match and obedience Show-N-Go. Boyd says it's considered an annual pilgrimage for many.

"People from all over the country that have the same love of the breed get together and basically just share what we know and share our appreciation for the breed," Boyd added.

Helen Witt traveled from Tennessee with her five year old -- Dunkin. She's say preparing for the shows is tough work, but in the end it pays off.

"You want them to be in condition. You want them to have good muscle tone since they are a sporting dog, you also want them to be physically fit," said Witt. "We're all trying to breed a better dog."

For Witt, like many, the hundreds of miles traveled is about more than just the competition.

"It is a lot of fun," said Witt. "We love the dogs. We love the competition and if you didn't come here you wouldn't get to see these people."

The competition gets underway Friday and goes through next week. It is also open to the public.

The field trials begin on Monday. There will also be a national sweepstakes drawing taking place. People will be able to win prizes donated from places around the country.
