The future of the Duluth Police Department's mounted patrol unit is looking uncertain.
Nothing is decided, but Lt. Mike Ceynowa said, "We are looking at several possibilities but it is to early to speculate exactly what those will be."
He said they are also working through a hiring process, and if they don't find highly qualified candidates, some positions may be cut instead.
They have four horses on the mounted patrol squad, which was brought back in 2014. The horses and their officer partners patrol between April and the December.
The mounted patrol costs the department $250,000-300,000 per year, according to Ceynowa. He said $30,000 of that comes from Duluth's tourism tax.
Ceynowa said the department will make a final decision on the budget in the next month or two.
