Authorities say there was extensive damage to one of the apartments, and five other rooms had water damage from the sprinkler activation.

The Duluth Fire Department found smoke in the third floor hallway, and a kitchen fire in one of the apartments on the third floor. The resident inside of the apartment was assisted out before fire crews arrived. Authorities say he suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a local hospital.

Residents had to wait in the lobby while the smoke was being cleared, but were eventually allowed to return to their apartments.

The cost of the damage is estimated to be $25,000 for the structure, and $4,000 for the contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
