Brennan said a 911 caller reported the discovery of the body in the Town of Sanborn around 4 p.m. Thursday. The body was located near a trailer on Beartrap Road, which is midway between Ashland and Odanah.

"On Thursday afternoon, at approximately 4 o'clock, we received a call from a Bad River Housing Authority worker that was doing a routine security inspection on some property that they own on Bear Trap Road," Brennan said.

Around the same time as the 911 call, the sheriff's office put out a missing persons alert for 39-year-old Shane Cadotte of Odanah, who had not been seen since the previous week. The alert said Cadotte had been reported missing "possibly under circumstances indicating that he is endangered or has been harmed."

Family reported that he was missing, according to Brennan.

"They said it's unusual for him to be not in contact with family," Brennan said, "and they suspected some foul play might be involved."

At first, Brennan said the information was sketchy, so his department had not done any active searching.

Brennan said the body has been positively identified as Cadotte. His body has been sent to Madison for an autopsy.

He urges anyone with information to come forward.

"I know there's community members out there that know what happened and can help us out with this," Brennan said. "We need to get a resolution to this and have the person or persons that are responsible for this punished and taken care of."

The sheriff's office and county coroner continue to investigate Cadotte's death. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ashland County Sheriff's Office at 715-682-7023.
