The 49-year-old, who is from Lawton southwest of Kalamazoo, announced her candidacy Tuesday to succeed Republican Bill Schuette, who cannot run again for the office under term limits.

Schuitmaker touts herself as a "law-and-order conservative" who opposes abortion. House Speaker Tom Leonard is another potential Republican attorney general candidate.

Republicans and Democrats will choose their attorney general nominees at conventions next summer, months before the November 2018 general election.

Also Tuesday, accountant Mary Treder Lang of Grosse Pointe Farms announced her candidacy for secretary of state. Republican Ruth Johnson is term-limited.

Treder Lang has been involved with GOP politics as a precinct delegate, state House candidate and former state committee member.
