A truck driver suffered substantial burns after an explosion in his vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

Duluth fire officials responded to the incident at about 1:45 p.m. on Superior Street and 22nd Avenue West. Assistant Fire Chief Erik Simonson said the truck was transferring waste oil when a pump inside backfired, igniting the collection of vapors.

The truck was from Rainy Lake Oil in International Falls, Minn. It's a company Simonson said regularly serves the community.

"It's not a fly-by-night outfit by any means," he said. "Something happened here that was unusual and very unfortunate."

The truck was stopped in an alley when the malfunction occurred, according to Simonson.

Simonson said the driver suffered substantial second-degree burns to his upper torso and was brought to the hospital. His condition is currently unknown.
