Park Point residents living between 13th and 15th Avenues will have a chance to bid on the tax-forfeited land behind their homes after the county met with some of those residents Monday.

Land that was originally set for sale as one, large parcel was divided up into smaller ones for residents to bid on after an outcry from those who live next to the plots. The Duluth City Council gave a unanimous, final approval on the auction Monday night.

When the land goes on up for auction come November, anyone will have the ability to bid on the land, and as councilors say, that most importantly included those living right next to it.

"This gives them the chance to bid on their property if they want to do that, but if somebody wants to come in and buy the whole chunk then they're also going to have to be bidding against the neighbors, so I think it makes it much more fair," Councilor Sharla Gardner said.

Special legislation was passed earlier this year to allow for residents underwater plots behind their homes to have first bid on that land. Councilors reminded residents tonight that the two subjects are different.

A total 26 parcels will be up for auction on Park Point after the county completes an appraisal and the planning commission makes its review.
