As hunters gear up for fall, bowhunters in Duluth are also getting ready for a change.
"They've actually increased the limit of antlerless deer to unlimited tags inside the city," Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance President Phil Lockett said.
Lockett said it's a first-time move in a year where most of the state is seeing tighter restrictions.
"We kind of expected the rest of the state was going to go down in harvest," Lockett said. "So, when they said they wanted us to go up in harvest it was a little bit of a surprise to us."
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said 95 percent of the state will only allow one deer to be harvested this fall. In some parts of the state, hunters will have to apply for a permit to shoot a doe when they haven't had to in the past.
"It's different; it's surprising," bowhunter Dustin Marino said. "I would think the DNR would want to keep it consistent. The deer have been hit just as hard in Duluth as they have outside Duluth."
Marino also said the city bowhunt has changed over the years.
"I've got my limit of five every year except last year I only got one," Marino said. "It was definitely tougher last year. The deer have been hunted now their entire lives and they're more wary than they use to be."
Regardless of how tough it is, Lockett said they still need to be managed in Duluth and hunters don't mind pitching in.
"The city hunt its just a great opportunity for hunters to be able to hunt in their backyard," Lockett said. "You can get off work at 4:00 and be in the woods at 4:30."
Hunting licenses go on sale tomorrow statewide. The Duluth city hunt is already closed to applicants.
