Deer hunters in most of northeastern Minnesota will only be allowed to harvest bucks this fall as the Department of Natural Resources tries to rebuild deer numbers.

The bucks-only harvest will take place in 14 permit areas covering Lake, Cook, and much of St. Louis counties. In those areas, no antlerless deer may be harvested by any hunter, including those with archery or youth licenses.

Statewide, the harvest will be limited to one deer in 95 percent of permit areas.

"Many hunters voiced concerns about current deer densities and their hunting experiences in recent years. We heard from hunters at the listening sessions we conducted, in the online comments we solicited and by contacting us directly," Leslie McInenly, big game program leader for the DNR, said in a statement. "This past winter only added to those concerns so this year’s conservative approach will protect more antlerless deer, reduce the statewide harvest and allow the population to rebound."

A lottery to shoot an antlerless deer will take place for another 69 permit areas in east-central, north-central, and western Minnesota.  Hunters can enter the lottery for antlerless permits beginning Friday, Aug. 1. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Sept. 4.

Deer hunting licenses, lottery applications and special hunt applications are available at any DNR license agent, by telephone at 888-665-4236 or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Lottery winners will be notified in October.

The zone covering Duluth is again classified for an intensive deer hunt.

A map showing deer permit areas is available at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/deer.
