Here in the Northland, we're used to lakes, but a new toy is changing how we enjoy the water.
"You can swim like a dolphin and fly like a bird," Twin Ports Flyboard Owner Kevin Swanson said.
The flyboard is making its Twin Ports debut. It's a water jet pack on a board that is hooked up to a jet ski. The water launches you up to 55 feet in the air.
"You never get a chance to fly like this," Swanson said. "So, we started it."
Flyboards have only been around for a few years. Now, you can rent one by the hour and Swanson will come to a body of water near you.
"My favorite thing is just to hover 50 feet above the ground," Sky High Flyboards Owner Caleb Gavic said.
Gavic rents flyboards in the Twin Cities and looks more like an action hero when he showed off on Island Lake.
"It's something new to try," Gavic said. "Very few people know about it; very few people have tried it."
The good news is you don't have to be an aerial acrobat to blast off. Swanson's dad Rick has tried it at 58 years old.
"So far, I'm the oldest," Gavic said. "I think if I can do it, anyone can do it."
For beginners, Swanson will control how high you go from the jet ski. Pros like Gavic have the power in their own hands with a control. If you want to try, you have to weigh over 100 pounds and sign a waiver.
"I'm hoping to expand," Swanson said. "I hope to be have an area in every lake around here."
That's Swanson's dream. A full-time gig teaching people how to fly complete with jet ski and parasailing rentals.
Swanson said flyboarding has the same risks as other water sports. He said the helmet protects from water in the ears.
The flyboard rents for a couple hundred dollars an hour. The equipment is also up for sale.
Swanson's business is based at the Inn on Lake Superior. You can also contact Duluth Lawn and Sport.
