Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker made the trip up to Ashland Tuesday to tour the Xcel Energy Bay Front Generating Station.

The station employs about 35 people and uses biomass to create energy.

The governor's tour north comes as the gubernatorial race heats up in Wisconsin.

Democratic candidate Mary Burke visited Superior over the Fourth of July. At that time, Burke said under Walker, Wisconsin lagging behind the rest of the Midwest in terms of job creation.

Tuesday, Walker responded to that criticism and said voters should take a look at Burke's record.

"We are one of only 22 states that has gained 100,000 jobs since 2010 and I think voters deserve to look at the difference. In my first three years as governor we created just about twice as many jobs as Mary Burke did during the time she worked for Jim Boyle," he said.

Burke was former governor Doyle's Secretary of Commerce.

Another hot issue this election surrounds the proposed iron ore mine in northwestern Wisconsin's Penokee Hills.

Walker said he still wants to see a mine going forward. Burke said, last week, she wants to see a better balance between job creation and environmental standards when it comes to mining legislation.
