Nolan: Postmaster General to Review Duluth Facility Closure

Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Minnesota) says Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has agreed to personally review the Postal Service's decision to close the mail processing facility in Duluth.

Nolan said Donahue made no promises during a 30-minute phone conversation last week, but listened to Nolan's concerns.  Nolan says besides the 70 jobs that would be lost, there is no logical, sensible reason to close the facility, which he described as cost-effective and expanding.

Workers were told in late June that the mail processing facility would close in 2015 as part of a nationwide consolidation effort.  It had been previously spared from the chopping block during a round of cuts in 2012 and 2013 that led to the closure of 141 other centers.

The Michigan Street facility will remain open as a post office, but mail from the Duluth area will be sent to St. Paul for sorting.  That could add an extra day to the amount of time it takes for letters to reach their recipients.

Rep. Nolan said the Postal Service has refused to hold another meeting about the closure, since one was held in 2011, so he will hold his own public forum this Friday to hear opinions on the closure.  The forum will take place at the United Methodist Church, also known as the Coppertop Church, at 230 East Skyline Parkway from 9 to 10 a.m.

Mail processing facilities in Bemidji, St. Cloud, and Mankato are also among the 82 slated to close in 2015.
