The Duluth City Council voted unanimously Monday night to change driving lanes on College Street to better benefit bikers.

Between Kenwood Avenue and 19th Avenue East, the street will be changed to have one driving lane in each direction. Two painted bike lanes will also be added.

The council voted to amend the resolution, which originally asked for bike boxes on this stretch. The boxes were meant to help the bikers turn left.

Councilor Joel Sipress said those boxes are no longer necessary.

"It eliminates the possibility of a right turn on red for motorists," Sipress said. "So if we were to do bike boxes at this time, we would lose the right on red both onto Kenwood Avenue and on 19th Avenue East."

Sipress said the area has not shown a need for the bike boxes, but if it does in the future, they can easily be added.
