Over the past 19 years, it wasn't hard to find Greg Peterson behind the bar at BG's.
But he took some time off last year, after he got his cancer diagnosis.
"No one wants to hear stage 4 cancer. When the surgeon told me that, it was a hell of a wake-up call. I was like, now what?" Greg told us at BG's on Thursday.
Thanks to chemotherapy, which he said he wouldn't wish on anyone, and surgery, he is now cancer free. He goes to the doctor to get scanned every few months.
As the owner of an Iron Range business, he's often donated to the Sand Lake Shuffle, a fundraiser that helps cancer survivors and their families. But last year, he was a participant. He and his friend, Jon Pettinelli, walked together.
"I was very fortunate to make that survivor's lap with him. Especially since we didn't realize it would be the last time for him," Greg said.
Pettinelli died late last year. He had been fighting colon cancer for several years. But his brother, Chuck, said that they are carrying his mission to help others, forward.
"He left a lot of good things to hang on to. And this is one of those things," Chuck said.
Jon and Greg decided at the Shuffle they wanted to raise more funds for the event. So this year, the "Stand up to Cancer" event is debuting. It's a family friendly, activity filled day at the Mt. Iron Community Center. All the money raised will go to the Shuffle.
"We want to give back, because these organizations do so much good," Greg added.
You can bring donations for auction items for the event to BG's. You can also make monetary donations all the up to the Shuffle, which is August 8-9th.
The Stand up to Cancer event is Saturday, July 19th, from 11am-6pm, at the Mt. Iron Community Center. There will be food, live entertainment, bouncy house, and the auction.
Plus, there's a celebrity dunk tank. Renee Passal and others will be participating!
