You may have seen a Joy Global truck or two over the 4th of July, in one of the many parades around the Range. It's part of their community involvement, and they want to grow that part of their business.

"We're heavily involved in Habitat for Humanity as well, and in community improvement projects in Virginia. And we're always looking for more to do," explained John Ward III, General Manager.

Joy Global is the parent company of several product brands, including P&H, which you may be used to seeing in our mines. The P&H division manufactures shovels, drills, and other heavy equipment. But Joy also makes and services Letourneau loaders. Plus, other divisions include underground mining equipment and conveyer equipment.

"The people are Joy Global," Ward added. "P&H is one of our products. And under this large gray building on northbound Highway 53 in Virginia, we service our products."

He explained that depending on the year, more of their business could be putting together brand new equipment, or it could be the exchange and rebuild of existing equipment.

For example, they can take something that's worn out, like a bucket from a large loader or a boom from a mining shovel, and bring it back up to good as new. Then that refurbished piece can be shipped to another client.

"Sometimes we'll handle an exchange from South Africa," Ward said.

Their business has really grown recently because of the iron ore mining in Canada. Because of the increased demand in their services, they're hiring welders. Potentially, according to Ward, an entire new shift may be needed, which is about a dozen people.

There are about 70 people who work at the building in Virginia.
