A mystery was pulled out of the Duluth-Superior harbor on Thursday.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, workers dredging in the harbor pulled the remnants of a vehicle out of 26 feet of water between Midwest Energy and the General Mills Elevator "O" slip.

Deputies said the vehicle was examined by investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. A Wisconsin license plate and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) were found in the debris. The VIN indicated that the vehicle was a blue 1978 Ford pickup truck.

The license plate, BA37-546, was last registered in 1991. Investigators traced it back to Safeco Insurance Company. Safeco is checking its records, and efforts to trace the license plate manually are underway.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
