Work is now officially underway on a $29.25 million project in downtown Duluth.

City leaders and the Duluth Transit Authority helped break ground on the new Multimodal Transportation Center near Michigan Street Thursday afternoon. The construction site is between 2nd and 3rd Avenues West.

Dennis Jensen, general manager of the DTA, says Thursday's groundbreaking is a result of 10 years of planning.

"It's a reality, and I don't think it's really set in yet," Jensen said. "When we start seeing this building come down it will really hit home then, and we'll be excited."

Demolition and construction work is expected to take about a year and a half. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for December 2015.
