Ely is one step closer to a new public library.

Construction began on the 6,600-square-foot building on Monday. The new location is just a block away from the community center where the library currently takes up five rooms.

Library Director Rachel Heinrich said a more than $450,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Education helped make the new space possible.

"We will have a space for teens, that's a separate space," Heinrich said. "We haven't had that in the past. We're going to have some other designated areas, which should be great because right now things are just kind of crammed into corners."

Heinrich said the building is expected to be finished by the beginning of November. They plan to move all of the library's contents as soon as construction is finished.
