A new plan to help students get to class on two wheels is in the works for College Street in Duluth. The city's planning division is proposing re-painting a section of the street between the College of St. Scholastica and the University of Minnesota Duluth - from Junction Avenue to Kenwood - with two bike lanes going both ways.
It is a section of roadway, according to the Duluth Planning Division, that studies have found needs more alternative transportation accommodations
"Today if you're biking on College Street between UMD and Scholastica you have to contend with traffic, and that can be a really dangerous situation," explained Jenn Moses, a planner with the city at a public input session. "So having your own bike lane could be a lot safer and hopefully encourage a lot more people to use their bikes."
On Wednesday, they were hammering out the details with community members at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth.
The plan doesn't call for any construction, just re-striping, to allow for two driving and two bike lanes in each direction. so Moses says the project would be pretty painless.
A final proposal will be presented to the City Council sometime this summer, and if approved, could be completed by late summer or early fall.
