There’s a big step in the recovery process for a UMD student. Nineteen-year-old Alyssa Lommel almost died after spending a subzero night outside in Duluth back in December.

She suffered severe frostbite, losing parts of her hands and feet. On Monday, Lommel Instagrammed a picture of the final prototype of her new hand.

The caption says, “The final prototype of my hand. This is just the first step to making my actual hand that I will be going home with on Friday :)”

Police say Lommel, a sophomore from St. Cloud, had been out drinking with friends Dec. 6 and was dropped off at her Duluth house around midnight.

A passer-by spotted Lommel on the front stoop of the house next door about nine hours later suffering from severe hypothermia.
