Snowmobiles don't usually travel across open water, but that's exactly what watercross racers do best.

Crowds gathered at Moose Lake City Park over the weekend for the watercross season opener.

Derek McPheeters, the vice president of the International Watercross Association, has been racing watercross for 17 years. He said what he loves most is the competition.

"If you can do it, winning is by far the best part," McPheeters said. "And then just all the camaraderie with all the racers. We compete against each other on the track, but it's kind of like a big extended family when we're off the track."

Racers in Moose Lake over the weekend came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and North and South Dakota.
