A Northland man who is used to fighting crime, can now add something a little different to his list of duties.
Sergeant Jake Engelman with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office saved a tiny, day-old fawn earlier this week.
A trucker noticed the little guy sleeping under his semi. The trucker asked Engelman, who was working on reports on his squad computer, to help him.
Sure enough, Engelman found the fawn curled up and sleeping under the semi. He said the fawn was still wet and couldn't have been more than a day old.
"I tried looking around, trying to see where the nearest trees were but we couldn't see a doe anywhere. But we knew she was close because the fawn was still kind of wet," explained Engelman.
The patrol sergeant said he doesn't typically like to move wildlife, especially newborns, but there wasn't much choice.
The fawn started following Engelman so he brought the fawn toward the closest woods.
"As soon as it started making noise and calling for mom, mom came running out of the woods and staring at me. So I knew we found her. We set him down in the grass and backed away a little bit... just as we were leaving I saw they were linked up together and walking back into the woods," he said.
Engelman said he didn't think the act was anything more than what they do every day. He said the pictures, however, will be great memories for his children.
