Green grass...room to move...it's the recipe for good business and happy pigs.
"I guess it's in my blood," YKer Acres Owner Matt Weik said. "I didn't always know it was there. I guess I've always liked bacon."
YKer Acres in Wrenshall has been around for about seven years, but since last fall they've been focusing on pasture-raised pork. The pigs chow down on things like sugar beets, carrots and pumpkins. It's a difference you can taste.
"Pork is the most sensitive meat there is to input," Weik said.
People can buy pork shares from YKer Acres, but you'll also find the local meat at popular Duluth restaurants and shops.
"It provides for a better flavor I would say," Executive Chef Tony Beran said.
Lake Avenue Cafe is one of several restaurants incorporating YKer Acres pork.
"It's nice to be able to go out and see the pigs you'll be cooking one day and also to see how they are raised," Beran said.
Northern Waters Smokehaus also serves up the local meat.
"The fat is beautiful," Owner Eric Goerdt said. "If you're in my kind of business, the fat is where it's at."
Not looking to eat out? Just head over to the Whole Foods Co-Op in Duluth.
"It's doing well," Jesse Hoheisel said. "It's nice to have a local meat supplier. It's the first one we've had that's in the area."
Weik said they hope to raise all their own food for the pigs to eat in the coming years.
