For Conley Janssen and his kids, the Itasca Gun Club is home and they're not the only ones who feel that way.
"Last year, we had a little over 500 kids come and take their hunter safety and hunter education here," Janssen said.
The old Itasca Gun Club sits on property leased by the DNR. They found out last year that lease would not be renewed so Magnetation can mine the property.
"We're relocating because there's a need for a safe place for people to shoot and a place to train our young people," Itasca Gun Club President Joe Oliver said.
That's why they purchased 160 acres about one mile away from the old property. It's paid off for the most part, but the club still needs $800,000 for the project.
"The budget to replace the earth work we have here is around one million dollars," Oliver said.
Oliver said Magnetation chipped in $20,000 and Itasca County gave another $30,000, but there's still money that needs to be raised.
"It took a long time to get what we got now," Relocation Coordinator Ted Gustafson said. "If it takes as long to get that again, we'll do it again."
The Itasca Gun Club serves more than 700 families. They also see about 2,000 shooters before deer hunting season.
The gun club hopes to have enough done on the new range for deer hunters this fall.
They plan to start construction in July. The indoor range on the old property will be open to shooters until 2016.
