Another beautiful day in the Northland is hard to pass up, but warmer weather doesn't come without unfavorable consequences. Mosquitoes are here and in full force. Their size and numbers have many people wondering, is this the worst season we've seen for mosquitoes?

When you ask people about mosquitoes, they typically have a few choice words for the pesky pests.

"Very annoying!" said Andrew Zimmerman. Matthew Thibodeau called them "bloodsucking buggers."

So far this season, they are taking quite the toll.

"I have a couple [bites] on the backs of my legs and then some on my arms," said Thibodeau.

And if you think they're worse than usual, you might be right.

"The eggs and the larvae develop in standing water, so the more standing water you have, the more mosquitoes you have," explained Tim Craig, the head of the biology department at UMD.

Craig said this winter and spring have created the perfect habitat for a mosquito breeding ground. The Northland had a ton of snow and then rain, creating plenty of standing water. Now, we are seeing higher temperatures.

"Whenever there is warm weather then they start to develop. The more warm the weather is and the more rain, the more chances there are for multiple broods of mosquitoes," said Craig.

It seems Northlanders are trying to keep the swarms of mosquitoes away from their homes and yards. Eyewitness News called around to at least a dozen pest control companies. They all said business was booming.

Products to protect your skin are also flying off the shelf. Russ Francisco at Marine General says his customers have noticed the uptick in mosquitoes.

"Brutal, that's the number one word, brutal," he said.

Francisco said they always have a good stock of bug dope, but this year has been exceptional.

"This year everybody is jumping on it quickly. We actually ran out and had to get more in," he said.

Unfortunately, Craig said the mosquitoes won't be going anywhere until we have drier weather so all we can do is cover up and wait.
