Dr. Russell Hill loved the Iron Range, and had a great passion for its historical roots.
The now deceased WWII veteran was especially impressed with how the ore taken from the ground there, helped win two world wars.
He kept detailed memories of his time growing up in Virginia and Eveleth. Hill also tried his hand at fiction, writing a story loosely based on his grandfather, about how the mining boom started.
Hill has since passed away. But his daughter, Cheryl Gordon, has taken over the task of getting those memories and stories published.
The book called Mesabi: Pioneers is the first in a trilogy about the roots of the Range. Gordon met an author named Jeff Smith, who co-authored the final piece.
It's now being edited, but the hope is to have it all finished in time for a book launch by the Virginia Historical Society, possibly in September.
"I hope that people on the Range know that they should be proud of this book. It's a story about their ancestors," Gordon told us. She now lives in New Mexico, but plans on being at the book party.
They have a goal of $5000 on Kickstarter, to get first part of the trilogy published. They are already over $3,600.
