University of Wisconsin-Superior officials announced Thursday several of their programs will be suspended as part of their budget strategy.
"Several of our master's programs, particularly those in some of the visual arts, are going to be suspended. There are a couple programs in the communicating arts,"explained Chancellor Renee Wachter.
Wachter said nearly half of the university's graduate programs will be suspended. The university has 25 graduate program offerings, 11 will be suspended.
Wachter explained 'suspending' means those programs won't take any new students, but will graduate the students already enrolled.
A undergraduate program and minor will also be suspended.
It's part of their budget strategy, explained Wachter. The university has to make up $4.5 million in either cuts or revenue over the next five years.
The theater program, though isn't cut, is still under review.
"They do a tremendous amount of service for the community. It's part of that vibrancy and quality of life. I think we have some fabulous alumni rolling up their sleeves to help pitch in," said the chancellor.
But there is still more to do. A few weeks ago, all of the custodial staff received at-risk letters. The custodian's representative, Carolyn Kaiser, said the nearly 30 jobs are still up in the air.
"There is a lot of unknowns, but what we do know is that they are at risk. They're here, every day, coming and doing their job," she said.
Wachter said they do not know yet whether outsourcing those positions is the best strategy. They're still waiting on more information before they make any decision.
