Duluth Planning Commission Approves Rezoning for Vacant Rockridge School

The Duluth School District and neighbors of the still-vacant Rockridge Elementary School in the Lakeside neighborhood are one step closer to a compromise.

The Duluth Planning Commissioner approved a new rezoning of the Rockridge site Tuesday evening.

Neighbors are thankful it will limit development and maintain a public easement for hiking.

Officials from the school district say it's more restrictive than a rezoning plan that failed last year, but the new plan should help sell the property

"It may not be perfect. I don't know that everybody in the neighborhood is satisfied. I can tell you the school district isn't totally satisfied,"  said Kerry Leider, the district's property and risk manager. "I think there's been some diminished value potential in the process, but usually that means it's fair and there's consensus and it's probably the right thing to do."

The rezoning plan now moves on to the City Council for approval.

  • TV Campaign Ads Make Wealth an Issue in Minn. Election

It seems an hour doesn't go by without several television campaign ads criticizing a candidate for having millions of dollars or trying to line his or her pockets at government expense. Class warfare is nothing new in politics, but it certainly is more pronounced in Minnesota this year because of two Republican candidates: Stewart Mills and Mike McFadden. They've been the target of a barrage of attack ads aimed at their personal wealth and how they accumulated it.
