Running a restaurant isn't easy at any age, but imagine doing it at 86 years old. That's what one Superior woman is doing and she's celebrating a birthday.
"It's my birthday all right," Esther Schaefer said.
Schaefer owns the East End Cafe in Superior. She's been running the business for 49 years and Wednesday is her birthday.
"A body in motion stays in motion," customer Kenneth Miller said.
Schaefer worked in restaurants since she was 13 years old. Her mom owned a cafe of her own.
"It's about the only thing I really know how to do," Schaefer said.
The business means long hours and it's a face pace, but Schaefer likes it.
"I just like the variety trying to figure out different things to eat," Schaefer said. "I hear the customers complain if it ain't just right and tell them to eat it anyway."
There's no doubt Schaefer serves with spunk.
"Don't cross her," Miller said. "I know one of my friends did...and she jumped all over him."
So, how much longer will she be firing up the stove?
"I have no idea," Schaefer said. "I don't look ahead. You never know from one day to the next."
