The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the Cloquet River northwest of Duluth due to a drawdown of the Island Lake Reservoir.

According to the advisory, Minnesota Power decided it is necessary to allow more water than normal to drain out of the reservoir due to excessive rainfall.  The extra water will result in a rapid rise in the river and flooding of low-lying areas along the Cloquet River, especially in the areas of Hunter Lake and Bowman Lake.

The Weather Service stressed that the Island Lake Reservoir dam is not at risk.

The flood advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
