Governor Mark Dayton has signed a bill aimed at closing the pay and compensation gap between men and women on Sunday, according to his office.

Supporters of the bill, dubbed the Women's Economic Security Act, say the average Minnesota woman earns 80 cents on the dollar compared to what a man makes in a similar job.

It doubles the amount of time given to women for maternity leave from six weeks to 12 weeks. Data shows more mothers work than stay at home in Minnesota compared to other states. It also expands access to affordable child care.

Opponents say the bill could hurt small businesses. Republican State Rep. Andrea Kieffer also argued the bill could make women seem like "a bunch of whiners."
