Friends of the 16-year-old boy who died after jumping into Eagle Lake on Friday night said the teen was participating in the "Cold Water Challenge," according to WDIO sister station KSTP.
Friends said Davis Colley texted his girlfriend earlier in the evening to say he was going to jump into the lake near Norwood Young America.
The challenge has been gaining momentum on social media. It is intended to raise money for cancer charities, but law enforcement officials have been warning people of the possible dangers jumping into a cold body of water.
Carver County deputies received a report of a teen who went underwater and never returned to the surface around 7:30 p.m. Authorities recovered the body of the teen around 11:00 p.m.
Colley's friends said they are not sure why he decided to participate or why he was at the lake by himself.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
A fund has been set up for the Colley family. Those who wish to donate can send checks to the Colley Family Fund, attn. Michelle, Citizens State Bank, P.O. Box 789, Norwood Young America, 55368
