The first saltie to arrive in the Duluth-Superior Harbor this season is finally docked.

Heavy ice cover on Lake Superior had made getting here an incredible challenge.

The 453-foot Diana was scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning, but the ice proved to be insurmountable. The Duluth Port Authority then estimated that the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged ship would make its way under the Aerial Lift Bridge by 8 p.m. Again Wednesday night, the ice proved too thick for the ocean-going vessel.

Finally, just minutes before midnight, the saltie made it under the Aerial Lift Bridge and docked near the base of the Blatnik Bridge in Superior.

On Thursday, port leaders greeted the captain and crew in a welcome ceremony on board.

Salties will typically come and go from the Harbor until December.
