A memorial service for former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., was held in Maryland Thursday morning.

U.S. Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, and Duluth Mayor Don Ness were among those in attendance for the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Md.

Oberstar, who represented northeastern Minnesota in the U.S. House from 1975 to 2011 and served as chair of the Transportation Committee in his last two terms, passed away in his sleep Saturday morning.  He was 79.

As mourners were arriving for the service in Maryland, Oberstar was honored in Duluth as the ship named in his honor pulled under the Aerial Lift Bridge and blew a formal salute.  Oberstar had spoken at the renaming ceremony for the Hon. James L. Oberstar in 2011, saying he never imagined his name would be on a vessel of such significance.

James Louis Oberstar, the son of a miner, was born in Chisholm on September 10, 1934 and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1952.  He received degrees from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul and the College of Europe in Belgium.

He is survived by his wife Jean, six children (Ted, Noelle, Annie, Monica, Lindy, and Charlie), and eight grandchildren.
